Local authorities have arrested and charged a man for a robbery and assault after an incident in Oxon Hill, Maryland. According to reports, the accused man and two other suspects allegedly robbed a man in a parking lot in Oxon Hill.
The incident supposedly occurred after the men asked another man for his cigarettes. Police say they then threatened him with a knife and took is money and other belongings. After being apprehended, the police chose to charge one man with armed robbery, second-degree assault and first degree assault. No word yet on whether the two remaining suspects have been apprehended.
When defendants find themselves facing charges like these, a strong criminal defense strategy will be extremely important. Particularly when an alleged crime involves multiple defendants and multiple charges, defense attorneys may find an opportunity to help protect their clients from overzealous prosecutors' attempts to hold a single defendant accountable for the actions of many. It is crucial that a lone defendant not take the fall for the actions of others. Defendants, after all, are entitled to a presumption of innocence in court.
Local Upper Marlboro defense attorneys are committed to ensuring that this does not happen to their clients. They can investigate the accident and collect the state's evidence against the accused. Thereafter, they can negotiate with the prosecution based on the level of facts present. Depending upon the precise scenario, local attorneys can help get charges reduced or even whole cases dismissed.
Being present during the commission of crime does not automatically make someone guilty. And, committing a minor offense does not automatically make that person a felon. But without the help of an experienced criminal defense attorney, the authorities may leverage unfair information and circumstances to inflict unwarranted punishment on an accused.
