Local Prince George's County authorities have arrested a man in connection with a marijuana distribution plot. According to reports out of Upper Marlboro, police arrived at a residence where a man and woman were witnessed arguing. Police then witnessed a bag of marijuana thrown from the window.
Once recovered, authorities determined that the bag contained over 400 grams of the illegal substance. The man involved in the argument was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Criminal defense strategies for such charges can take on many forms.
Drug offenses are unique in the criminal world. They can be charged on an escalating scale from misdemeanor possession to serious felonies relating to conspiracies to distribute larger amounts. Depending upon the circumstances of a case, the facts could merit minor penalties to serious jail time. Often times, the line between the small charge and the big offense is thin. The existence of a few extra ounces or other materials may push a minor offense into more serious territory.
Local Upper Marlboro criminal defense attorneys are experts in defending against these types of drug charges. They can help the accused lessen the charges during plea negotiations by highlighting the weaknesses in proving the more serious crime. These legal experts can push for the lesser charge. Such a maneuver may secure a plea to a misdemeanor that may be accompanied by only probation as opposed to a long jail sentence for a drug felony. This second chance can be critical to the person charged in securing future success after overcoming their criminal charges.
