Upper Marlboro man arrested for taking loaded gun to airport

Local authorities have confirmed that two people were taken into custody at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport for allegedly carrying loaded weapons to a security checkpoint. The first arrest occurred after TSA employees allegedly discovered an Upper Marlboro man with a loaded 9MM handgun in his luggage. The following day, a woman was arrested for apparently having a loaded 38 caliber handgun in her carry-on.

The weapons were confiscated by authorities. They were the fifth and sixth weapons seized at BWI Airport so far this year. Nationwide, over 1,000 weapons have been discovered at airports. These individuals are accused of violating federal law by bringing a gun to a checkpoint, and they might face criminal penalties for the offense. Criminal defense strategies in such cases, then, must confront what many may see as obvious guilt with the common reality that the accused may have simply forgot they were carrying their gun.

These days, airports have strict rules regarding what can and cannot be stored in one's luggage or carry-on bag. As a result, it may be easy to place an item in the wrong bag -- carrying a weapon to a security checkpoint by mistake is a perfect example. Although the man and woman in this case have been charged with crimes, they will remain innocent until proven guilty.

Local Upper Marlboro criminal defense attorneys can help those charged with such violations avoid unfair penalties. Today, criminal charges can send someone to jail even if they did not mean to conduct an act which broke the law. While the facts of a case may not be in dispute, a local lawyer can help the accused engage in plea negotiations that eliminate serious criminal penalties and view the mistake for what it was.
