Charges of sex crimes are serious allegations that need to be addressed in a prompt manner. The failure to take prompt and aggressive action when accused can result in life altering consequences beyond time in prison. A 44-year-old man who has been accused of sexually assaulting a boy in two states, including Maryland, is likely coming to terms with that reality right now.
The charges in Maryland were filed last month after a 14-year-old male said that he was sexually assaulted by the man over the course of more than six years, beginning in 2006. The man also reportedly showed the boy pornography. After being charged with multiple counts of sex crimes, the accussed man is currently in jail.
Sex crimes are often difficult cases to defend. In addition to the fact that it is a highly emotionally subject, this is in large part do the fact that there is often a lack of physical evidence. The case outcome may come down to the word of the accuser over the accused.
The fact that sexual assault cases are sometimes difficult to defend is not a reason that someone who is facing such charges should give up and admit defeat however. An accusation is not the same as a conviction and with such serious consquences on the line, including having to register as a sex offender, it is important to mount an aggressive defense against such charges. Retaining a lawyer who handles these types of cases is usually the best place to start.
