There are times when a fight between two people escalates into violence. However, police and the public should not be too quick to accuse a person of a crime until all the evidence is examined and the accused has a chance to tell their side of the story.
Two brothers are being charged in connection to a fatal stabbing at a local gas station in Capitol Heights. According to reports, Prince George County authorities are accusing the men of stabbing a third man to death during a fight amongst a group of people.
The brothers, ages 21 and 23, were arrested last week at their home in Baltimore. They are being charged with first- and second-degree murder. No information has been released concerning their criminal defense strategy.
While details about the incident are sparse, the generalities of the tragedy are not unique. Fights happen, especially amongst young men. Sometimes, these altercations escalate and weapons are used. When that happens, deaths are an unfortunate reality.
It can be difficult to ascertain what exactly happened amidst such chaos. Who pulled a weapon first or who struck which blow are questions that may not be easily answered. As a result, an innocent person may be charged with a crime for which they were merely in the vicinity.
Local Upper Marlboro criminal defense attorneys may be a valuable resource in these difficult cases. They can investigate an accident and decipher authorities' evidence. Then, local attorneys can determine an effective strategy specific to the facts of each case. Criminal defense lawyers can work with authorities to lessen penalties or have criminal charges dropped entirely by showing the lack of evidence in support of the prosecution's claims. Hopefully, these efforts will help ensure that a person charged with crimes by association is not unjustly penalized.
