An Oxon Hill man has been charged in a recent Upper Marlboro double shooting. According to reports, police have identified a 20 year-old man as the prime suspect in the shooting that left one person dead and another critically injured.
Apparently, the man was in a confrontation near Marlboro Pike before he allegedly opened fire. Authorities claim he fled the scene but was tracked by a witness who notified police of his whereabouts. Police have stated that they recovered the weapon used in the attack. This fact could be decisive in the man's criminal defense.
The murder weapon is not just a novelty of Hollywood. It is, along with eyewitness testimony, one of the most important pieces of evidence in a killing. In this case, it appears that authorities have both tools in their arsenal. As a result, the alleged shooter's options might be limited.
Nevertheless, those accused of crime need to consult a local Upper Marlboro attorney. Even when it might seem clear to others, that one committed an unlawful act, local attorneys can review the facts to determine what defense are available.
For example, the motive and circumstances behind a killing may dictate the degree of murder charges. This can greatly reduce the penalties associated with the acts. Local defense attorneys can help the accused use facts available to them to enter into plea negotiations and reduce jail time, fines and probation to fair amounts.
Without the help of an experienced attorney, however, criminal charges migh be increased and penalties may be maximized. Further, it is important that the accused make sure the state proves its case. To limit the damage of a possible conviction, the people facing criminal charges should consider retaining competent legal help.
