The Calvert County Sheriff's office arrested two Maryland men this past week for drug possession and second-degree assault. According to reports, the men were arrested after a woman passenger in their car felt threatened and jumped from the vehicle. She ran to a nearby home and notified police.
The officers caught up with the car and arrested a 27-year-old Sunderland man with drug possession and second-degree assault. The other person arrested, a 25-year-old Upper Marlboro man, was charged with possession of Percocet and marijuana. Their criminal cases are pending, and they will have the opportunity to present a criminal defense as the case moves along.
The Sunderland man was released after posting a $10,000 bond. The Upper Marlboro man, meanwhile, was released on his own recognizance. The disparity in bail was likely due to the more serious assault charge. Judges have discretion to set bail and will generally set a higher number for more serious allegations.
Local Upper Marlboro criminal defense attorneys know how the bail system works and have helped those accused of crimes lower bail, so they do not have to wait in jail until the resolution of their criminal cases. This can be important as a final resolution in a criminal case can take months.
Local criminal defense attorneys can then help the accused contest the charges by explaining their side of the events. They can engage in plea negotiations to lower penalties or face the validity of charges head-on. No matter the crime and no matter the circumstances, local criminal defense attorneys can help those charged with a crime expertly maneuver the criminal justice system and avoid arbitrary penalties.
