Prince George's County State Attorney revealed recently that a man had been indicted for kidnapping a Montgomery County judge. According to reports, a 24-year-old man is alleged to have assaulted the female judge in her home before kidnapping her using his car. The judge was able to escape the vehicle at a shopping center parking lot.
The suspect then fled the scene and crashed his vehicle nearby. He then fled to Florida, until he was eventually arrested and sent back to Maryland for prosecution. According to police involved in the investigation, the 24-year-old and the judge were engaged in a domestic relationship. Such a critical fact will surely play a key role in the man's criminal defense.
In addition to the kidnapping charge, the man is also on the hook for charges of driving under the influence, assault and false imprisonment. He is currently in jail with his bail set at $500,000.
The serious charges could lead to significant jail time, unless the man is able to tell his side of the story. From the surface, this case appears to be damning for the suspect. A home assault, followed by a kidnapping of a female judge by a 24-year-old man, is not the type of facts that look good on any headline.
These snippets, though, may not tell the whole story. If the two were engaged in a domestic relationship, the incident may simply be chalked up to an emotional moment between a couple, which was stoked by alcohol. While physical violence cannot be condoned, the addition of kidnapping and related charges may simply not be warranted.
Local Upper Marlboro criminal defense attorneys can help the accused tell their story. They also can ensure the prosecution does not unfairly color their story as something it clearly is not.
