Maryland drug investigation leads to 19 arrests

A two-year drug investigation in Maryland has led to the arrest of 19 people, according to an announcement by the Maryland State Police. The sting reportedly broke up a drug ring that supplied heroin and fentanyl in the Baltimore area.

Of those taken into custody, nine have been charged with felony drug crimes, including distribution of heroin, distribution of fentanyl, distribution of cocaine, distribution of heroin to an undercover officer and conspiracy to unlawfully transport large quantities of heroin into Maryland. Other charges include conspiracy to possess controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia. The other 10 defendants are facing misdemeanor drug charges.

As a result of the investigation, which was opened by the Maryland State Police Gang Enforcement Unit in June 2016, authorities seized 1,075 grams of heroin, 66 grams of fentanyl and over 200 grams of cocaine. One handgun, three vehicles, thousands of dollars and drug paraphernalia were also recovered. Several law enforcement agencies assisted with the investigation, including the Maryland State Police Heroin Investigation Unit, the Maryland State Apprehension Team, the Anne Arundel County Police Department, the Baltimore Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Felony drug charges carry harsh consequences for those who are convicted. It is common for defendants to be sentenced to long prison terms and assessed heavy fines. Therefore, it is important for people charged with drug crimes to have strong legal representation. By retaining a criminal defense attorney, it may be possible to fight the charges and get the case dismissed before it goes to trial. If a case does go to trial, an attorney could work to build a strong defense and obtain an acquittal. In some cases, an attorney may recommend negotiating a plea deal that reduces the charges and penalties.
