Most people have already violated the law

Most people tend to think of themselves as law-abiding citizens. They would be surprised if they got arrested. Family members and friends would also be shocked, wondering how this could have possibly happened.

And it may be true, in a general sense, that the person doesn’t intentionally break the law on a consistent basis. But it’s worth noting that most people do break the law from time to time. They may not realize it or they may not understand the ramifications, but they have violated the law.

Underage drinking

One example of this is underage drinking. Studies show that the average American has their first alcoholic drink around age 15. However, the law mandates that no one should drink until they are 21 years old or older, with a few rare exceptions. Even if a college freshman simply has a beer while watching a football game with friends, that’s a violation of the law.

Pirating digital content

Another common issue is when people illegally download different types of digital media. Have you ever downloaded a song that you didn’t pay for? Have you ever pirated movies or different types of software? It may seem like a victimless crime, but it can lead to serious charges.

Traffic violations

On top of that, most people commit traffic violations with a fair amount of consistency. They break the speed limit, roll through stop signs, speed up at yellow lights, fail to yield the right of way properly at a roundabout, and much more. Even tailgating is against the law, but people do it every day.

This shows why, even if you consider yourself a law-abiding citizen, it is important to know about all of your defense options and legal rights if you face arrest.
