It’s not just alcohol that leads to impaired driving allegations

Alcohol is indeed responsible for most impaired driving arrests. Some drivers may make a mistake, believing they are sober enough to drive when they’re actually over the legal limit. Others may intentionally decide to take the risk, perhaps saying they didn’t have another way to get home or that it was “just a short drive.”

However, while alcohol is involved in most cases, it’s important to understand that it’s not the only reason someone can be arrested for impaired driving. A driver can still face charges even if they haven’t consumed any alcohol that day—or if they don’t drink at all and have been sober for years.

Drugs and medications

The key point is that any substance impairing a person’s ability to drive could lead to a violation of the law. Impaired drivers cannot safely operate their vehicles, potentially endangering others on the road.

In many cases, this happens when people use illegal drugs like cocaine or methamphetamines. It can also occur when someone uses marijuana or consumes edibles. These substances can all impact driving ability.

Additionally, it’s crucial to read the instructions and warnings on prescription and over-the-counter medications. If a medication warns that it may cause drowsiness or fatigue or advises against operating heavy machinery, it means individuals should not drive while using it. A person could be arrested for impaired driving even if the only substance they’ve taken is a medication prescribed by their doctor.

Your legal options

As you can see, there are various ways someone could face impaired driving charges, even if they don’t expect it. If you find yourself in this situation, be sure you understand your legal defense options.
