How a felony conviction affects your life

On Behalf of | Mar 23, 2025 | Felonies

If you are facing felony charges, odds are that your main concern is the sentence you are going to receive if you are convicted. You may be worried about having to pay high fines after drug charges, for instance, or spending years behind bars.

These are important factors to keep in mind, but it is also wise to consider how a conviction can affect your life even after you serve the sentence.

The impact of a permanent record

The issue is that a felony conviction means that you’ll have a permanent record. As a result, you could lose your right to possess a firearm. You’re not allowed to purchase a firearm or have one where it is readily accessible—even for simple activities like hunting or target practice—due to your record.

Additionally, that felony may show up on a background check. This can make it more difficult for you to get a job, as employers may prefer to go with applicants who do not have a conviction on their record. Some jobs will also be impossible, such as those that require you to carry a firearm—security guard, police officer, bank guard, etc.

Many people are also concerned about the fact that their permanent record could have an impact on their personal relationships or their reputation in the community. This is certainly true for public figures, but it can also apply to local politicians, clergy members and others in positions of trust.

Your defense options

If you are facing serious charges, you need to consider all of the ramifications as you look into your legal defense options. Make sure you know what steps to take at this time.
