Do men or women get more DUI charges?

On Behalf of | Sep 5, 2025 | Drunk Driving

Both men and women are arrested on drunk driving charges in Maryland every year. That said, you can look at the statistics for DUIs and find certain trends. One thing that reports note is that it is more likely that male drivers will be arrested for impaired driving than female drivers.

There are a few different reasons for this. One is that men are also more likely to drink a significant amount of alcohol. Some studies report that they drink three times as much alcohol as women on a yearly basis. This is an average, of course, so it does not apply equally to everyone. But it does show that men are statistically more likely to be over the legal limit, simply increasing the odds that they would face drunk driving charges.

Driving and risky behavior

Another factor is that men tend to drive more miles than women. Since they spend more time behind the wheel, there is a greater exposure to potential legal charges. Additionally, when men and women go out drinking together, it is more likely that men will be driving home at the end of the night, again increasing their exposure to DUI charges.

Finally, studies have found that male drivers are more likely to engage in risky behavior. This can include things like aggressive driving, speeding, tailgating, running red lights and much more. But it can also be extended to drunk driving. Men may be more likely to take the risk of driving under the influence, when women would seek another form of transportation.
