Could an auto accident lead to PTSD?

On Behalf of | Mar 3, 2026 | Car Accident

Post-traumatic stress disorder can have a significant impact on a person’s life. It often leads to issues like flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, depression and much more. It can create extensive emotional trauma that lasts long after any physical injuries a person has suffered.

PTSD is often identified in relation to soldiers who have seen combat, but the reality is that auto accidents are one of the top causes for the average person. In one study, roughly 26% of people who had been involved in car crashes reported symptoms of PTSD. The more severe the crash—such as when a person suffered significant injuries or when a loved one passed away—the greater the chances that they could develop this disorder.

Avoidance behaviors

One of the major life changes that PTSD can create is that a person may engage in avoidance behaviors to steer clear of potential triggers.

For someone who was involved in a car accident, this could change their life significantly. They may no longer feel comfortable driving or even riding in cars. They may actively try to avoid the area where the car accident took place or feel nervous around similar road designs, such as intersections.

Not only can this be emotionally difficult, but it can also have a practical impact on daily life. Someone who previously had to drive for work or during their commute may now find employment impossible, leading to significant lost wages and a reduced earning capacity.

Seeking financial compensation

It is important to consider all costs stemming from an auto accident. Those who have suffered injuries need to know what options they have to seek financial compensation from the negligent driver who caused the accident.
