In the spring and early summer, traffic on the road tends to change. Motorcycles become more common, and corresponding motorcycle accident rates increase.
To some degree, this is naturally going to happen because of longer daylight hours and better riding conditions, leading to more exposure to potential accident risks. But there is also an issue where drivers are not used to seeing motorcycles on the road, so they may forget to check for them in their blind spots or take other necessary precautions.
How do these motorcycle accidents occur?
There are numerous ways in which motorcycle accidents can happen. One of the most common is known as the left-turn accident, which happens when another driver turns in front of a motorcycle.
The danger of a left turn is that the driver may not properly yield the right of way. If they turn when there is not enough space, the motorcyclist could strike the side of their vehicle during that turn.
This can happen all year round, of course, but drivers may be more likely to overlook motorcycles in the spring. They are used to looking for cars, trucks, semi-trucks and other large vehicles. If a driver just glances at the road ahead of them before turning, they may not take enough time to actually see that a motorcycle is approaching at all. They start their left turn, thinking they have nothing but clear roadway ahead of them, and they inadvertently cause a serious accident.
Compensation after motorcycle accidents
These types of crashes can lead to severe and life-altering injuries for motorcyclists. Those who have been injured need to know what options they have to seek necessary financial compensation.
