Local authorities have executed an arrest warrant on a Maryland man suspected of assault. According to reports, the suspect and an accomplice got into a physical altercation with another male. The incident occurred in District Heights.
There, the arrest warrant alleges that the men got into an argument outside a convenience store near the 6100 block of Marlboro Pike, leading to a fight, which resulted in an assault charge against one of the men involved. Now, he must mount a criminal defense in order to tell his side of the story.
Fights can present one of the most difficult factual scenarios to decipher in any criminal charge. These altercations often escalate quickly and involve numerous individual. Moreover, those present during the fight, like the participants themselves, have a motive to twist the details of the incident when recounting events to authorities.
As a result, it is inherently possible for the wrong person to be charged with a crime. After all, we do have a right to defend ourselves. Therefore, being in a physical altercation is not, by itself, reason enough for a conviction. Instead, prosecutors also must prove other elements of the crime.
Local Upper Marlboro criminal defense attorneys help accused suspects get their story out and defend against inappropriate characterizations by the government. These methods have proved very helpful in reducing penalties and garnering dropped charges or acquittals. In the event that some culpability does exist, local lawyers may engage in plea negotiations in order to get some charges dropped and reduce penalties to an acceptable level.
