A 54-year-old Maryland man is facing charges for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting an 86-year-old woman. According to reports, the woman was waiting at a bus stop in Columbia, Maryland, when the man asked if she needed a ride. The man allegedly drove the woman to a vacant parking lot in a black BMW, and sexually assaulted her for two hours in a nearby woods.
Police said that the woman walked to a gas station after the alleged assault, and contacted law enforcement. After reviewing the surveillance video, police arrested the man because his vehicle matched the car in the surveillance video, according to reports. Police admitted that they could not positively identify the license plate in the video, but arrested the man because a thorough search revealed a matching car registered to the 54-year-old man.
Law enforcement is now holding the man without bond. He is facing eight sex offense charges, one kidnapping charge and one assault charge.
Sexual assault charges can have serious consequences, like jail time, fines and having to register as a sex offender. Anyone charged with these crimes does have a right to an attorney, who may be able to craft a defense in order to find fault in the prosecution.
In this case, police partly relied on video evidence in order to make an arrest. Although police say other evidence linked the 54-year-old man to the crime, not having a positive identification on the license plate could work in favor of the man facing the charges. A full investigation for crimes like this one is necessary, in order to make sure the correct person gets charged.
