On Behalf of | Nov 3, 2023 | Drug Charges

For many college students, coffee is the strongest drug they will ever use during their time in higher education. However, college also gives many students a sense of freedom and ability to try new things that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to do back home. Many parents worry that this freedom will lead their children to do things that get them in legal trouble.

One of the biggest fears for many parents is that their children are using illicit drugs. An illicit drug could lead to abuse, which can spell trouble for a college student’s education. It’s very possible for college students to get a hold of illegal drugs. Here’s what you should know:

What kind of drugs could college students use?

Alcohol is likely the most common kind of drug college students can get their hands on. Even many parents have fond memories of drinking while enrolled in college. However, that doesn’t negate the danger of irresponsible drinking.

Many students misunderstand the effects of alcohol. They could end up drinking too much and making poor decisions that lead to criminal activity. Furthermore, underage college students may have access to alcohol which can lead to fines and jail time.

Even though it’s been used for years, marijuana is becoming a popular choice of drug for many college students. This drug is prohibited on most college grounds.

What are the consequences of drug use for college students?

The dangers of drug use are multifaceted. A college student could become addicted to a drug. Being caught with an illicit drug can lead to criminal charges. And, many colleges have policies that prohibit criminal activity. A college student could lose out on grants and student aid if they are charged with drug use. Parents may need to learn about what kind of legal defense options their children can get against criminal charges.
