How long will drugs stay in your system?

On Behalf of | Sep 15, 2025 | Drug Charges

Drug tests can often show evidence of past use, even long after the effects of those drugs have worn off. This may become important if you have been accused of something like drug possession, drug use or impaired driving. These tests help to demonstrate that you did have illegal substances in your system.

But how long are those tests going to work? If you use marijuana, for example, the effects will probably wear off after just a few hours. But even after you are no longer feeling high, how long would drugs be detectable if the authorities ran a test?

Factors to consider

Every case is unique, so there are a few different factors you have to consider. For example, maybe this is the first time you have ever used marijuana. If that is the case, it would likely stay in your system for about three days.

However, if you use marijuana daily, then it may be detectable in your system for 15 days. If you are a heavy user, it could even show up in a urine test for up to 30 days. The dosage matters, and chronic use certainly makes a difference.

Plus, the above is just for urine tests, but those are not the only type of test that can be conducted. For instance, the authorities will sometimes use hair follicle tests. Evidence of drug use can often show up in these hair tests for around 90 days, or three months.

Your defense options

When you are facing drug charges, you are likely concerned about fines, jail time, a permanent record and the impact on your future. That is why it is so important to understand all of the legal defense options that you have.
