If you run near traffic, these tips can help keep you safe

You enjoy going out for your daily jog. It helps you stay in shape, and you like the consistency of the routine.

At the same time, you are often running near traffic, and you know that creates an inherent danger. The following tips can help you avoid being involved in a pedestrian accident.

Obey all rules of the road

Always follow the rules of the road, such as crossing only at marked crosswalks and when you have the signal. Do not jaywalk. If you run in the road itself, make sure that you are running against traffic, not with it.

If you can, use the sidewalk

If there is a sidewalk, though you still have some risks when you cross the street, it is generally safer than running in the road itself. It gives you extra distance and keeps you away from distracted drivers.

Make sure that you are visible

Many drivers are not looking for runners because they do not run themselves. They simply do not realize you are there. Wear bright clothing during the day and consider wearing a headlamp or reflective clothing when running at night.

Avoid all distractions

Finally, stay focused on the traffic around you while you run. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by your cellphone. Don’t wear headphones so that the music drowns out the sound of traffic. Always be as alert as possible.

Seeking compensation after an accident

All of these are helpful tips, but they cannot guarantee that drivers will not make mistakes and cause pedestrian accidents. A driver’s negligence can still put you at risk, even when you do everything in your power to stay safe. If you suffer serious injuries, you may deserve financial compensation for lost wages, medical bills and much more.
