Music can be a driving distraction

On Behalf of | Nov 6, 2026 | Car Accident

Did you know that listening to music in the car can actually increase the odds that someone will be involved in a car accident? Studies have found that it leads to more driving mistakes.

A big reason for this is that music can be a distraction. For instance, some people comment that it is harder for them to see if the music is too loud. When looking for a specific cross street or an address, they may turn the music down so that they can see better.

The music itself does not have any effect on their vision, of course, but just on their cognitive processing abilities. It can be overwhelming for the senses. It is more difficult for the brain to process visual information with the music at a high volume.

The type of music matters

Additionally, driving errors are more common when people are listening to faster music that they prefer. If someone is allowed to choose their own pop or rock playlist, for example, the chances of distraction go up significantly. If they are given soothing classical music, on the other hand, the same effect is not always seen.

Part of the issue is simply that people connect with the music they like. Someone will be more focused on listening to the lyrics or even singing along, which is also a driving distraction.

Seeking compensation after an accident

Listening to music in the car is very common for the majority of drivers. But it can be dangerous. If you have been injured in an accident someone else caused, you need to know how to seek financial compensation.
